NewsHarvest 20082007This year the harvest was greatly helped by Andrew Taylor, from Fortygroves Hawkes Bay, and his mechanical Tornado harvester. He harvested 200 trees which yielded about 2 tonnes of fruit. The remaining 1 tonne was easy pickings the next day for our “gossip in the grove” pickers and 2 pneumatic rakes. It was all over in 2 days – bliss! We expect to use the mechanical harvester every year from now on for our growing number of larger trees. New Zealand Olive AwardsSeptember 20072006 was a great year for Kilrae Olives. Our 2 oils submitted to the New Zealand Olives annual awards both won gold medals, and our Tuscan was best in the intense blend class! In 2007 we entered our Tuscan extra virgin olive oil in the NZO awards, this time the medium blend class, and happily it won a gold medal too. iloveseptember 2007The Wairarapa Olive Marketing Group began exporting extra virgin olive oil under the 'ilove' trade name to Vancouver in 2006 and has plans to market 'ilove' in 2 other major Canadian cities shortly and eventually the US. Kilrae Olives was pleased to supply 100 litres for the extra virgin blend in 2007 and expect to provide increasing volumes in the years to come. Farmers Marketdecember 2006A Farmer's Market opened in Masterton in December 2006 and we were foundation stall holders. A group of 5 local olive oil producers have joined together and we share the selling of the oil. It is a successful market and our oil is selling well. |
